Adoption of Younger Foster Children

We get many inquiries from families wanting to adopt children "up to 3 or 4 years old." Why can't Family Focus help families adopt a child this age?

Most children in foster care go back home to family. When this is not possible, they are "freed" from parental rights, and can be adopted.
Most freed foster children are adopted "in place" - either by their current foster family, or by another family within the same foster care agency.

Family Focus does not have "our own" kids. Our agency works with foster care agencies that have children who have been freed, but their own foster care agency has not found a family for them. They have often been in care for many years, in multiple foster homes, or in group or institutional settings. These are known as Priority 1 Children. They are at least 10, and may have behavioral or therapeutic needs, requiring dedicated families who are willing to commit to them forever.

If you are only open to adopting younger children, contact your local Department of Social Services and ask about becoming a foster family.
